Books go on sale Monday and Tuesday, February 13th and 14th.

The Great Book (Re)Sale starts tomorrow

Hundreds of well loved children’s books in French and English will be on sale in the TFS West Campus foyer on Monday and Tuesday.

Peruse and purchase from among past favorite reads of other TFS families, and grow your kids’ love of reading. The Great Book (Re)Sale is a rare chance to find deals on quality books and expand the literary appetites of your children.

How much will each book cost? You get to decide! When it is time to pay, consider the worth of each book that you have selected. Here is the price list:

GOOD READ $2
GREAT READ $4
AWESOME READ! $6

Remember, all funds raised will support West Campus PA initiatives that benefit our children and strengthen our community. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

Some of the books are skinny and light, others are thick and heavy. Some will delight readers with colourful pictures and easy words, while others will weave webs of wonder from a procession of pages and chapters. But we hope that all of the books will find new homes where they will tickle a child’s imagination!

All transactions are cash only and all sales are final. Funds raised will support West Campus PA initiatives that benefit our children and strengthen our community.

Thank you for your support!

The PA is grateful for the lovely donations of children’s books that we have received from so many families during the past week. We hope that all families will support The Great Book (Re)Sale by purchasing books that they can enjoy at home.

We welcome your feedback in person or via email at pa.west.reps@tfs.ca

(Re)juvenate Your Kids’ Books

Are your children’s bedrooms and bookshelves stuffed with wonderful books that they’ve long outgrown? Wish you could replace them with gently used publications en français and in English that are would pique their interests? The PA has your back!

The Great Book (Re)Sale will take place at the West Campus between February 8 – 14. Donate gently used children’s books, and purchase high quality novels and nonfiction that your budding bookworms will devour.

Here’s how it will work

  1. Drop off gently used children’s books and magazines appropriate for PK - Grade 9 in French and English between February 8 – 10. A collection bin will be placed in the main foyer on the evening of February 7.
  2. Volunteers will collect and sort the books and prepare them for resale on Friday evening. The PA welcomes parent and student volunteers who can help out!
  3. On Monday and Tuesday, February 13 and 14, parents and students are invited to peruse the book sale and purchase a few good reads. All funds raised will help support PA activities and initiatives.

A note on what to donate

The PA will be thankful for donations of books that your children once enjoyed but have since outgrown, and which are of a quality that your family would be happy to purchase again.

Please do not drop off adult books, nor books that are of poor quality or which are falling apart. We regret that we are also not seeking games, toys nor any items other than children’s books and magazines.

Breakfast and a Green Plan

A reminder that the school has invited all parents to stop by at the Gymnasium tomorrow morning, Thursday, February 2nd between 8:30 – 9:30 AM to hear from Dr. González about the exciting transformation coming to the West Campus playground this summer.

Enjoy a light breakfast while the Head of School discusses how the West Campus Greening Plan will bring more enjoyment to our kids’ learning and play, and even more pride to our community.

An Evening at the Circus

All TFS West Campus families and staff are invited to attend the seventh International Potluck, which will take place on Friday, November 25 right after school in the main gym and will run until 7:00 PM.

Buy International Potluck tickets today

The theme of this year’s event is the Circus! Join us under the big top for an evening of lively entertainment and activities, and a tasty international buffet.

Tickets cost $12 per person (children 3 and under do not require a ticket) and are purchased by completing the International Potluck registration form. Each family is requested to make a food contribution to the potluck – details are noted in the registration form. All funds go towards covering the cost of holding this West Campus community event.

Space is limited due to the maximum number of people we can have in the gym, so be sure to register early. Registration will close once capacity has been reached.

The PA Potluck team looks forward to having the entire West Campus community enjoy an entertaining time together. Be sure to dress in your most colorful clothing and comfortable shoes, and to send your child with a change of clothing for the event as it is directly after school.

If you have any questions or are able to volunteer to help with the event, please email the PA at pa.west.potluck@tfs.ca. You can also sign up to volunteer in the Potluck registration form.

Join the TFS Marathon Club

The TFS Parents’ Association is pleased to announce that for the fourth year, West Campus families can take part in the annual Mississauga Marathon! Join the TFS Marathon Club by Tuesday, November 15th to take advantage of the discounted early registration fee.

Sign up for the Marathon

As part of the 2016 Enersource Marafun Program, students and parents will run / walk 40 kilometres over a six week period at our school field. The final 2 kilometres will be completed on race day, with runners crossing the marathon finish line in front of thousands of spectators!

This year’s Mississauga Marathon is scheduled for Sunday May 7th, and training will begin after March Break. Upon crossing the finish line, each participant receives a medal and certificate of completion.

The fee is $40 per person (adult or student) if registration is completed by Tuesday, November 15th. Late registrations will continue to be accepted until November 30th at a cost of $45 per participant.

Anyone that wishes to sign up for a longer distance event of the Mississauga Marathon should email us at pa.west.reps@tfs.ca  as soon as possible. We will determine how best to accommodate your request based on the level of interest we receive.

The marathon is an opportunity for the whole family to share in the benefits of good health and well-being through physical activity. Participants do not need to be runners — the event is suitable for individuals at all levels of fitness and ability. Note that each family must have at least one parent or guardian registered to participate with or chaperone their children.

Sign up today, and be part a TFS tradition of active living!

Benefitting our children, strengthening our community
The TFS Parents’ Association hopes that you and your family had a lovely Thanksgiving Day weekend. All of us have much to be grateful for — our children in particular — and the wonderful people who surround them each day: their teachers, administrators and other staff, as well as the many parent volunteers who work silently to make their school a little bit more special!

PAW and Learning Café

Thank you to all who braved the heavy rain to join us for the first PA West Campus community meeting (PAW) that was held together with a TFS Learning Café.

During the PAW, we reviewed what was accomplished in 2015-16 and the beneficial impact made by West Campus parents during the school year. Financial highlights were presented, as well as a draft budget for 2016-17.

The Learning Café, presented by Dr Susan Elliott (TFS Learning Forum), Alexandre Ferrand, (TFS Junior School) and Claudette Landry (TFS West Campus) looked at how the Human Development component of the Ontario Health Curriculum is being integrated into the TFS curriculum. It was an excellent opportunity for parents to ask questions and gain a better understanding of what our children will be learning as they progress from one year to the next.

October PAW

The second of three PAW meetings will be held on Monday, October 24 at 2:30 PM, an hour before pickup, in the Digital Lab. The focus of this meeting is on your ideas for the current school year. It is an excellent opportunity to come together with other West Campus parents to share your input and ask questions in a casual setting.

Held three times each year, PAW meetings provide the West Campus parent community a chance to review and give feedback on PA priorities, progress and the budget. All parents are invited and strongly encouraged to attend.

Benefitting our children, strengthening our community

Get ready for la rentrée!

With summer winding down and la rentrée scolaire right around the corner, the TFS Parents’ Association at the West Campus is here to help you get the jump on the back-to-school rush!

Pizza Lunch Fridays

The PA is pleased to once again offer a hot Pizza Lunch every Friday to West Campus students in JK to Grade 7. With delicious cheese, pepperoni, veggie, or specialty pizza, as well as fruit and vegetables and a choice of milk or juice, Pizza Lunch is a nutritious treat that TFS kids look forward to at the end of each week. The cost of $248 per child for the full year (30 meals) will be charged directly to your TFS account.

Birthday Book Club

Organized by the Parents’ Association in partnership with the school library, the Birthday Book Club is a wonderful TFS tradition that encourages our children’s love of reading while building the West Campus library collection. Last year, the Birthday Book Club families added 28 volumes to the West Campus library, including popular fiction and nonfiction titles in French and English like L'encyclopedie des sauvenatureIf Kids Ruled the World and La vie compliquée de Léa Olivier (1 – 4).

Kids who are signed up can look forward to choosing a new book during the month of their birthday, which is stamped with a personalized commemorative donor’s bookplate before they sign it out for the very first time.

Register by Monday, September 26 and help to grow the legacy of literature at the West Campus library. The cost of $25 per child will be charged to your TFS account.

Used Uniform Sale and Donations

The PA will be holding a Used Uniform Sale in the foyer on Thursday, September 8 and Friday, September 9. Pick up some great bargains for those kids that grew over the summer! We will also be accepting donations of any clean, gently used uniform items that you may wish to drop off.

VOLUNTEER ALERT!  – We are looking for volunteers to help with the Used Uniform Sale. Please email pa.west.reps@tfs.ca if you are available to help at drop-off or pick-up on September 8 or 9.

Class Parents for 2016-17

Class Parents are important point-persons in the TFS community and the parental hub of each classroom. They liaise with homeroom teachers and mobilize volunteers in support of class-based and school-wide initiatives. Please approach them with any questions that you may have; they will do their best to respond or direct you to an appropriate resource.

Join us in welcoming the Class Parents for the 2016-17 academic year, and be sure to say hello when you see them at school!

Amazing BBQ & Fun Fair!

The weather held up and last week’s 2016 West Campus BBQ & Fun Fair was a resounding success!

Everybody enjoyed the burgers, hotdogs and ice cream, and the kids had fun scaling the rock wall, jumping on the bouncies and having their faces painted. It was also wonderful to welcome so many new families to our TFS West Campus community.

An annual event on the West Campus calendar, the BBQ & Fun Fair was only possible due to the hard work of the many parents and teachers who volunteered their time and talent, as well as the support of the school staff.

In particular the PA would like to acknowledge Sara Elemary, Kitty Kwan, Honey Hejmadi, and Amanda Endean, who led the organization of the event. We also thank the many parents who made financial contributions and who supported the silent auction, as well as the TFS Office of Advancement for sponsoring the ice cream truck!

We Collected a LOT of eWaste

The Electronic Waste Collection Drive on May 14th received wide support from both TFS families and households in the school’s neighbourhood. We appreciate the parent and staff volunteers who stood in the rain with smiling faces, welcoming and directing vehicles, and unloading the heavy electronics they brought.

Despite the weather, about half of the 40 cubic foot trailer had been filled by the end of the day – equal to an estimated 12 pickup trucks worth of material! Ontario Electronic Stewardship’s preliminary tally of our collection stands at 3.41 tonnes (over 7,500 pounds) of electronic waste.

With everybody’s participation we helped our kids make a real difference that benefited the neighbouring community as well as the planet that we all share!

Get Involved with the PA

As the school year winds down, now is a great time to think about getting involved with the TFS Parents’ Association in 2016-17.

Lots of opportunities are available – from the Comité de Bienvenue (Welcome committee) to helping to organize events like the BBQ & Fun Fair, or joining the PA West Campus Representatives team. We are actively seeking Class Parents for each grade, and also seeking a team to organize next year’s International Potluck, which we hope to hold in the autumn.

Click here to learn more about volunteering with the PA or send us an email at pa.west.reps@tfs.ca to let us know that you are interested. We’ll be happy to tell you more!

How to Become a Class Parent

Each class at the West Campus has a Class Parent (or sometimes two) who acts as a bridge between the teacher, the Parents’ Association and the families of other children in the class.

Class Parents play an important role, and being a CP is a great way to get to know your child's teacher, the other families in your class, and to help out in a meaningful way during the school year. Any parent can volunteer to be Class Parent for a grade that their child will be in next year. If two parents are interested in the role for a single grade, then they can be co-Class Parents.

To learn more or to express your interest in being a Class Parent for the 2016-17 school year, please send an email to pa.west.reps@tfs.ca.

Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the TFS Parents’ Association will take place on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at 7:00 PM in the Student Commons at the Senior School, Toronto Campus, located at 318 Lawrence Ave. East.

The current year’s PA activities and achievements will be celebrated, and elections will be held for the 2016-17 Parents’ Association Committee (which includes the West Campus Representatives). All TFS parents are encouraged to attend!

Used Textbook Sale at Toronto Campus

The TFS annual Used Book Sale will take place Friday, June 24 from 8:30 – 10:00 AM at the Toronto Campus in the Senior School gymnasium.

The used book sale will be of particular interest to students entering Grades 6, 7 and Level I in September. Curriculum books for Grades 6 to Level V will be available for purchase, at 60% of their list price. Non-curriculum books will also be available.

Learning Café – Mindfulness Seminar

A TFS Learning Café on Mindfulness will take place on Thursday, June 9th from 9:00 – 11:00 AM at the West Campus. Research indicates that children and adults who engage in mindfulness are more resilient, and that its practice can produce positive permanent structural changes in the brain. See details and RSVP by clicking below.
