Dear parents and the PA,

We, the grade sevens, would like to thank you all for organizing our lovely dinner, courtesy of Margarita, decorating the mini gym, wonderful decorations courtesy of Lesley and set up courtesy of many parents, setting up the limousine, and many photos taken by many of our parents that will make the memories last forever.

The limo was awesome and so thank you Mike for accompanying us in the limousine. We would also like to thank the PA for everything they have done to have made that night possible.

Thank you to all the school staff as well, to have let us use the space in the school for our dinner and the pre-dance fun. And finally, we would like to thank the parents who cleaned up after our dinner and who helped plan our dance!

We would like to thank the parents who set up sleepovers for us to have afterwards.

It was definitely a night to remember that we will never forget. Thank you so much for all of your help!

West Campus Parents Inspired by TFS Headmaster at PAW Meeting

Dr González delivers the keynote address at the September PAW meeting hosted by the TFS Parents' Association at the West Campus

Academic ambition, international-mindedness and teaching students the skills they need in life are pillars of education at TFS – Canada’s International School, says Dr Josep González.

“That’s what our school stands for,” explained the TFS Head of School to parents last Wednesday evening — an educational philosophy that combines the International Baccalaureate, the French national curriculum and the Ontario curriculum. “Three traditions, coming together through our own blend, which is TFS.”

Dr González delivered the keynote address at Wednesday evening’s PAW meeting (Parents’ Association – West Campus). It was the new headmaster’s first opportunity to address the West Campus parent community, and his passion as an educator and for his new school was evident to all.

Drawing on his experience at schools where he has held leadership positions in the past — like Charterhouse, St Paul’s, Eton College, and most recently the British School of Barcelona — Dr González talked about the unique value that TFS brings in its educational approach.

For example, he noted that in addition to the practical language benefits that come from learning in French and English, multilingualism and multiculturalism also provide added intellectual wealth. Different languages, he remarked, offer “views of the world which are very different in terms of the cultural heritage, the political makeup and our history as humans.”

“That is why giving our children that bilingual, multilingual education is extremely special,” said the headmaster. “We’re giving them more perspectives from which to look at the world.”

Inviting parents to consider what education is, and what children ought to acquire from it, he drew on the ideas of thinkers such as Montesquieu, Rousseau and Albert Jacquard, to demonstrate the close relationship between the French educational tradition and the International Baccalaureate, with it’s learner profile attributes.

“I loved hearing Dr González speak about TFS' education philosophy, because it's in line with my own life philosophy,” said West Campus parent Maude M., whose children are in PK and SK. “It's what I would love my children to get from a TFS education.”

Tom K., whose four children are in Grades 1, 3, 6, and 7, agrees. “Dr. González’s presentation was very inspirational,” he said. “If you weren’t an engaged parent before, you surely were afterwards.”

The first of three PAW meetings held during the academic year, the September 30th gathering was also a chance for parents to meet and mingle, and included an overview from West Campus PA representatives on what the Parents’ Association is all about, a review of the past year’s finances and a look-ahead at the budget and priorities for 2015-16.

“Prior to the meeting I had no real knowledge of what the Parents’ Association at the West Campus actually does,” commented Nisha M., whose daughter is in PK. As a new parent at the school, she also enjoyed getting to know other parents from different grades and hearing about their children’s experiences at TFS.

“I left with a greater respect and appreciation for all the members of the PA who selflessly give their time so that our children can all have a great experience at school.”
